In addition to launching a massive robocall campaign raising Obama's past association with Bill Ayers as a campaign issue, the Republican National Committee is out with a vicious attack mailer suggesting that the Democratic nominee is not just soft on terror, but willing to talk to terrorist leaders.
In a pamphlet forwarded to the Huffington Post by a Virginia reader, the RNC claims that Obama "thinks terrorists just need a good talking to." Obama has never said such a thing. Rather, he has discussed the need to open up diplomatic dialogues with heads of state, whether friends or foe.
The first page of the mailer contains a shot of a individuals standing at an airport window with a large plane outside -- obviously designed to evoke memories of the 9/11 hijackings.
"Terrorists Don't Care Who They Hurt," it reads.
Inside is a list of Obama quotes designed to paint Obama as a weak-kneed diplomat, too willing to meet "unconditionally" with leaders of rogue states.
"Islamic extremists want our laws changed, our culture destroyed and our families converted. We don't. What is there to talk about?" the mailer asks.
The ad amplifies charges that the RNC and McCain campaign have made against Obama in other forums, and comes amidst a veritable downpour of behind-the-scenes GOP attacks against the Illinois Democrat. In addition to the Ayers-themed attack, Talking Points Memo has documented four McCain/RNC robocalls running in multiple states:
* One that questions Obama's patriotism by saying he put "Hollywood above America" during the financial crisis.
* One that says that Obama and Dems "aren't who you think they are" and claims they merely "say" they want to keep us safe.
* One that attaches Obama to "domestic terrorist Bill Ayers," whose group "killed Americans."
* And one claiming that: "Barack Obama callously denied newborns needed medical attention by opposing a measure to force doctors to preserve their lives when they survive botched abortions."

They are really pulling out all the stops with the scare tactics at thiss point. I just pray it doesn't work!
1I just pray the wrong people don't freak out.
2This is just incredible.
3I have gotten plenty of flyers with untruths about McCain from the obama camp. its just what happens in politics. its not one sided for sure.
4I think a better question is why shouldn't we care what they have to say? Maybe we'd be surprised. Probably not, but at least we could say we tried before it escalated.
5No, it's not one sided. The only thing about that flyer that really bugs me, though, is the line at the top.
6Excellent point, Sticky
7"Why should we care what they have to say"
We've heard what they have to say. "Kill America" is the gist of it (I don't speak any middleEastern language). Why do we want to have a conversation with a group of people who want to wipe us off the face of the earth?

I really get bothered by people that think that simply talking to people that we don't agree with is some kind of cardinal sin. Recently open ideas such as talking with an enemy have been called anti-American. So I would like to pose the following.
From 1775 to 1782, American fought against the British to give birth to our nation and win our own freedom. In 1812, America faced off against the British again and insured our independence.
However, in 1917, through communication and diplomacy, the once arch enemies United Kingdom and United States joined forces to combat a common foe in Europe's Central Powers. 25 years later, the US joins European forces again to battle the Axis powers of Europe.
To quote a more recent example, in 1990 the United States led a coalition force into Kuwait in an effort to defend the nation from an Iraqi invasion. However, just 13 years later, the US set aside its difference with Iraq and entered their country as liberators (liberators could be argued, but that isn't the point of my post). Now we stand side by side with Iraqis in an effort to give their country the freedoms we so deeply enjoy.
My point, if not obvious, is that nations and its people have felts all different ways at one point or another. We once were enemies of the British. We were once enemies of the Germans. Hell, we were once enemies of Canada (War of 1812) and Mexico (1846). However, Isolationism or simply assuming that another nation or its people want to "kill American" without any sort of diplomacy simply allows those thoughts to fester and grow into self-fulfilling prophecies. Intelligent leaders such as Woodrow Wilson, JFK, and even George H. W. Bush knew that not talking to enemies was not the answer.
